Every kid needs a champion | Rita Pierson

Rita Pierson, a teacher for 40 years, once heard a colleague say, “They don’t pay me to like the kids.” Her response: “Kids don’t learn from people they don’t like.'” A rousing call to educators to believe in their students and actually connect with them on a real, human, personal level.

  1. I wish all teachers would watch this video. this video is very inspiring and funny, even as a high schooler I loved this video. I feel like if teachers watched this video it would help them understand their students better and be able to connect and have a relationship with them

  2. Shanda Jones says:

Amazing! It brought tears to my eyes. Every educator needs to hear this

  3. Peter Taylor says:

First saw this TED talk about 5 years ago when i started as a Teacher Aide. It inspired me then, and now – 5 years on, as I am about to commence my teaching degree – it inspires me even more!

  4. Sometimes we don’t see what the cause and effects are, and allow our ideology to make a connection. I think her mother cared deeply about the kids and I think she does. I’ve seen kids respond to that. Encouraging the successes and setting a goal of better has been shown to work. Lying and “acting”. I think kids see through. Being honest and apologising logically breeds trust.
I found this a strange mix of attributing effects to causes, but not based on logic.

  5. I Love Ms. Pierson spirit in the way that she keeps everything positive with kids and about kids

  6. As a teacher in training, this video literally changed my life. Thank you ❤

  7. No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship.. We teachers should love our kids, or else how will we teach them with most efforts.. After all, "Everybody deserves a Champion."

  8. I had to watch this video for one of my EDUC classes and I’m not even mad. This was so inspiring!

I am a 26 year old algerian teacher, 39 kids in each class, i have 4 classes, i work 22 hours a week, i am often exhausted when i go home… the kids move a lot, they like to play and some of them are pretty naughty. Sometimes, i dont feel like working, but i have to do it anyway, sometimes i dont sleep enough because i have something to prepare, correct, i take the bus for 40 minutes each day. But somehow, i managed to create a link, somthing that attached this kids to me, most of them really love me… and i feel like they see something in me, they like me, and it really touches my soul, this video makes me cry… so inspirational, we really struggle, but we will give all we can, help them all

Clip is useful for the modern teacher. Many teachers often go into class want to complete knowledge, they don't build relationships with their student. So, "your year is going to be long and arduous". Thank you Ms Rita Pierson
